Background

U.S. Steel Fairfield began operating in October 2020 after the completion of its first electric arc furnace (EAF). The Fairfield project was originally shut down in December 2015 due to unfavorable market conditions, but recommenced in 2018.[1][2] The EAF project cost $412 million.[3] U.S. Steel Fairfield previously operated a blast furnace (BF), which was shut down in 2015.[4]

In October 2021, U.S. Steel said it was 'eyeing' its Fairfield site as the potential location for its next $3 billion mini-mill, which would be comprised of 2 EAFs.[1] The company said it expected to begin construction of the new mill in the first half of 2022 with production beginning in 2024.[5]
