Background

UMC Metals Co. Ltd was established in 1994 in Chonburi Province in Thailand. In November 2012, the plant installed the energy efficient ECOARC which was inaugurated on February 06, 2013, after demonstrating 30% energy savings in comparison to conventional electric arc furnaces. The ECOARC was expected to replace the conventional EAF of capacity 380 ttpa installed in 2002 at the plant, which had been operating at the plant since.
