Background

The Urtuysky Coal Mine (Уртуйское месторождение) is an operating surface coal mine in Zabaykalsky Krai, Russia. The Urtuysky coal mine is a surface coal mine. It is owned by Priargunsky Industrial Mining and Chemical Association (PIMCU), which is part of Rosatom.

The mine has a capacity of 4.5 million tonnes per year, but it appears that it has reduced as PIMCU's 2021 Annual Report referred to capacity of 3.5 million tonnes.

Production in 2020 was 2.9 million tonnes. The same level of production was achieved in 2021, of which 1.7 was supplied to power plants within PIMCU's group and the rest to other domestic consumers. Krasnokamenskaya CHP is the main consumer. 2023 production was over 3 million tonnes.

Existing reserves of 35 million tonnes allow the mine to continue producing until 2034.
