Background
The Vallourec Star Youngstown steel plant began operating in 1999 and was originally owned by North Star Steel. North Star Steel was bought by Vallourec Star in 2002, at which point the facility was renamed and transferred ownership.[1] In 2011, the facility was expanded with a $57 million investment from Vallourec; the new extension began operating in 2013.[2]
In 2014, a worker suffered critical injuries after an accident with machinery. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration fined Vallourec Star $94,000 for 22 violations following the incident.[3]
In 2015, the plant was closed for three weeks due to declining markets.[4]
In 2019, an explosion at the plant's furnace occurred. No one was injured.[5]
In 2020, Vallourec Star Youngstown was given an award by the Ohio Environmental Protection Department for having 'environmentally-beneficial' operations, which included purchasing 86 percent of their power from zero carbon sources and recycling 45,000 gallons of wastewater per year.[6]
