YK Steel Busan plant (YK스틸), also known as Kukdong Steel Industry (predecessor), Kumho Industry (predecessor), Hanbo Iron & Steel (predecessor), is a steel plant in Busan, South Gyeongsang, South Korea that operates electric arc furnace (EAF) technology.
Location
The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Busan, South Gyeongsang, South Korea:
- Location: 760, Eulsukdo-daero, Saha-gu, Busan, 49456, Republic of Korea
- Coordinates (WGS 84): 35.083819, 128.989034 (exact)
Background
Kukdon Steel Industry was founded un August 1958 and relocated to the current site in Busan in December 1966. The company became YK Steel Corp in December 2002.[1] In 2020, Daehan Steel acquired the steel manufacturing facilities and sales business, while the Yamato Kogyo Group maintains ownership of the land for the Busan plant.[2][3] Daehan Steel acquired 51% stake in YK Steel Corp by September 2020[4] and increased its stake to 70% by August 2021.[5]
Given the development of the area to a residential area, there were plans to relocate the plant to Dangjin. In January 2022, an agreement was signed between the company and German engineering firm SMS group for development of Dangjin plant with new equipment provided by SMS group.[6] Reports suggest that the company has decided against relocating the Busan plant and has decided to build a completely new plant at the Dangjin site.[7][8]
In July 2024, it was reported that YK Steel has decided to postpone relocation of the Busan plant to Dangjin to 2027 due to difficulties in securing a power grid.[9]
