Yenakiieve Metallurgical Plant (Єнакієвський металургійний завод (Ukranian), ПАТ "ЄМЗ", Енакиевский металлургический завод), also known as EMZ, Yenakieve Iron and Steel Works, PJSC, Enakiieve Steel, Enakievo Iron & Steel, is a steel plant in Yenakiieve, Donetsk, Ukraine that operates blast furnace (BF) and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) technology.

Location

The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Yenakiieve, Donetsk, Ukraine:

Background

Metinvest Group lost control over its entities and property of Yenakiieve Iron & Steel Works in the non-controlled territory of Ukraine on March 15, 2017. The plant was then being operated illegally by unidentified people, according to Metinvest Holdings.[1] The plant was owned and operated by Vneshtorgservis ZAO, which belongs to the breakaway authorities of Donbass.[2][3] In 2021, a new company was established by a Russian businessman Evgeny Yurchenko, Southern Mining And Processing Complex (Russian: "Южный горно-металлургический комплекс", ЮГМК), which absorbed all of the metallurgical plants belonging to ZAO Vneshtorgservis.[4][5][6]

Operating status & workers' resignations

In 2021, production at the plant was halted in February[7] and (partially) resumed in September.[8] According to media reports, as of May 19, 2021 the plant has not been operating for 2 months and is preparing for bankruptcy; Vneshtorgservis was not paying for the raw materials supplied from the Russian Federation and the workers were not receiving wages.[9] According to another source, in 2020 approximately 1,200 people quit their jobs, with the main cause being the reduction in production in 2020 and the suspension of the plant in March of 2021, as well as significant wage arrears.[3]

As of November 2023, it appears that two Basic Oxygen Furnaces (BOF) out of the three, BOF №1 & №2, and one BF out of the two, BF №3 are operating.[10][11][12] BF №5 was to complete reconstruction works and start operating in the beginning of 2022, however, no supportive evidence has been found.[13]

As of November 2024, the two blast furnaces appear to be operating.[14][15] The two out of three blast furnaces seem to be operating as well. [16][17]
