Yenisey Seaport is a coal terminal on the Kara Sea in Krasnoyarsk Krai in the Russian Arctic.
Location
The map below shows the seaport's exact location near Yenisey Bay, about 70km south of Dikson.[1]
Background
The Yenisey Seaport coal terminal is being developed by Severnaya Zvezda, a subsidiary of AEON Corporation, as part of its plans to develop the Syradasaysky Coal Mine.[2] The company received environmental approval for the project in 2020.[3]
The proposed coal terminal is located near the village of Dikson in the Taimyr Dolgano-Nenets district of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. It is at the mouth of the Yenisei Gulf on the coast of the Kara Sea and is the northernmost port in Russia.[4]
In summer of 2021, Severnaya Zvezda began preparatory construction work on the coal terminal, including a 60km road to connect the terminal to the Syradasayskoye coal field, as well as a 1.5 km dam to connect the coastal zone to the cargo berth. As of 2021, the terminal's construction was expected to commence in 2022, reaching 7 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of capacity by 2026.[5][6] With the second phase of the terminal, capacity would increase up to 15 mtpa.[7]
It appeared that capacity plans were later downscaled in line with the mine's expansion plan. 2023 sources referred to capacity of the 1st phase of the project of 5 mtpa.[8][9] In April 2023, the Glavgosexpertiza of Russia reported that it had issued a positive conclusion on the creation of a water area for receiving and servicing cargo ships and icebreakers in Taimyr.[4] As per media reports in April 2023, construction was in active phase and the company planned to be able to ship about 1 million tonnes of coal by the end of the year.[8]
As of September 2023, the first phase of the project was in active construction, with planned completion in 2024.[4] As of December 2023, construction was on-going.[1] As of July 2024, with no official announcements about the project completion, it appeared that construction is still on-going, although some volumes may have already been shipped from the Syradasaysky Coal Mine.[10] Planet imagery showed construction progress from August 2023 to August 2024. The dam built extends from the shore into the Yenisei Gulf of the Kara Sea so that deep-draft bulk carriers can take on board as much coal as possible.[1]
