Yuzovsky Metallurgical Plant (Юзовский металлургический завод (Russian)), also known as YuMZ; Donetsk Electro-Metallurgical Plant PJSC (predecessor); DEMZ (predecessor); DEMP (predecessor); ISTIL (predecessor), is an electric arc furnace (EAF) steel plant operating in Donetsk, Ukraine.
Location
The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Donetsk, Ukraine:

- Coordinates (WGS 84): 47.982276, 37.810634 (exact)
Background
Name and ownership changes
Yuzovsky Metallurgical Plant was established in 1999 on the basis of the electric steel-smelting, swaging and pile-driving shops of the Donetsk Metallurgical Plant[1] and is located at the same location as the original plant.[2] Donetsk Metallurgical Plant (original plant, start year 1872[2]) has since then become a rolling mill and does not produce crude iron or steel.[3] Yuzovsky Metallurgical Plant shares its location with the Donetsksteel Metallurgical Plant.
The plant was originally named the Donetsk Electro-Metallurgical Plant (Донецкий электрометаллургический завод (Russian)) but has been renamed to Yuzovsky Metallurgical Plant[1] after being seized by the breakaway authorities of Donbass in 2016.[1] The original parent was the Mechel Group (Igor V. Zyuzin 50.2%, Other 49.8%), with owner listed as Donetsk Stal.[4][5] After being seized by breakaway authorities of Donbass in 2016[6], the plant became the property of Vneshtorgservis (with the owner name Donets'kyi Elektrometalurhiinyi Zavod PrAT).[7] However, since January 2021, the plant no longer belongs to Vneshtorgservis. A new owner company was created, SUE DPR UMP (Russian: Государственное Унитарное Предприятие Донецкой Народной Республики "Юзовский Металлургический Завод" (ГУП ДНР ЮМЗ)).[8]
The plant used to be part of the Donetsksteel Metallurgical Plant and shares a location. Yuzovsky Metallurgical Plant may still be confused as part of the Donetsksteel Metallurgical Plant. The 120-tonne EAF is part of the Yuzovsky Metallurgical Plant.[9] A 150-tonne EAF was in construction at Donetsksteel Metallurgical Plant in 2013 before the Russian invasion.[10][11]
As of November 2024, Yuzovsky Metallurgical Plant and Donetsk Metallurgical Plant are reported to be integrated into the Branch №1 Donetskstal, with the latter's units used as scrap metal for steel production at the former.[12] The plant planned to stabilize steelmaking at 30-35 ttpa of steel by the end of 2024.[13]
Changes in operating status
The plant stopped operating in 2012[14], then stopped operating again in 2018 due to a shortage of scrap supply[1], and finally resumed operations in November 2020.[15][16]
As of 2020, the plant has been operating two days a week due to the lack of scrap.[17] As of November 2023, it is unclear if the plant is operating. However, there is a source claiming that the plant was operating in October 2023.[18] As of November 2024, the plant is operating at 27% of the total capacity.[19]
