Background

The Zarand Iranian Steel Company plant began operating in 2008 as part of the part of Middle East Mines and Mineral Industries Development Holding Company (MIDHCO).[1]

To support production at the Zarand Iranian Steel Company plant, a coking plant with a capacity of 400 thousand tonnes per year went into operation in 2012, having been built with an estimated 92 million Euro investment.[2]

In 2021, Trump placed sanctions on MIDHCO, due to the Iranian metals sector is an important revenue source for the Iranian regime. This may have impacted the production/export revenue of the Zarand Iranian Steel Company plant.[3]

In June 2021, a fire broke out in the facility after a sudden overflow of molten material in the blast furnace; no injuries were reported.[3][4]
