Background

Bureinsky Coal Mine (Буреинский разрез) is a SURFACE mine in Khabarovsk Krai, Russia.[10] The Bureinsky coal mine is owned operated by Urgalugol JSC, a subsidiary of SUEK. The mine is situated in the Bureinsky coal field in the Russian Far East.

Coal from the Khabarovsk mines of Urgaugol (Bureinsky, Severnaya Coal Mine and Pravoberezhny coal mine) is exported primarily to China and South Korea.[10] The proximity of the assets to the Vanino Bulk Terminal is an advantage. Mines in this region also supply coal to power stations located in the Khabarovsk and Primorye regions.[10]

During 2022, Urgaugol coal mines continued to export the entire volume of coal that it could bring to the ports, taking into account the current logistical limitations. The main export markets now are China, Korea and Japan. The new commercial team managed to solve all problems with freight, and now it is not uncommon that the company even lacks coal for exports. The plan is to increase exports in 2023. There is still a strong demand for our coal on the domestic market due to the growth of power generation in Siberia and the Far East.[11] Urgaugol coal mines produced over 10 million tonnes and shipped over 6 million tonnes to consumers, about 4.9 million tonnes were exported to Asia-Pacific countries (in particular to China) and about 1.3 million tonnes were shipped for the needs of the energy sector of the region.[12]

In 2020-2021, the Bureinsky coal mine maintained production at 1.8-2 million tonnes per year.[13] Its reserves were depleting and were only 18 Mt at the end of 2021.[14]

In May 2023 it was reported that the mine will reduce production to 0.1 million tonnes per annum due to depletion of reserves.[12] However, 2023 production of the mine was still around 1.5 million tonnes.[15]
