Donetsk Metallurgical Plant (Донецкий металлургический завод (Russian, predecessor), Донецксталь-МЗ, ДМЗ (Russian, predecessor), Донецкий металлургический завод (ДМЗ)), also known as Donetsk Metallurgical Plant (predecessor), Donetsksteel - Iron And Steel Works PJSC, Donetsksteel, Donetsk Iron & Steel Works (predecessor), DMZ (predecessor), is a steel plant in Donetsk, Ukraine that operates blast furnace (BF) technology.

Location

The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Donetsk, Ukraine:

  • Coordinates (WGS 84): 47.982276, 37.810634 (exact)

Background

Donetsksteel Metallurgical Plant was established in August 2002[1] on the basis of the blast furnace and open-hearth shops shops of the Donetsk Metallurgical Plant and is located at the same location as the original plant.[2] Donetsk Metallurgical Plant (original plant, start year 1872[3]) has since then become a rolling mill and does not produce crude iron or steel.[4] Donetsksteel Metallurgical Plant shares its location with the Yuzovsky Metallurgical Plant.

Donetsksteel Metallurgical Plant was seized by breakaway authorities of Donbass and has been controlled by Vneshtorgservis CJSC since March 2017.[2] In 2021, a new company, OOO DMZ, was established as the owner of the plant.[5][6]

Production capacities and equipment

OHF was shut down in 2012.[7] At least one blast furnace out of the two seems to be operating.[8][9][10][11]

Operating status

Donetsk Metallurgical Plant paused operations in 2014 due to the Russian invasion, restarted in 2015, paused in 2015 due to a blockade, and restarted again in 2021.[12] The plant has experienced issues since 2017 when the breakaway authorities of Donbass announced that they were seizing all industrial enterprises operating on their territory. In 2017, the plant management announced that all workers would be laid off, and the plant stopped operating completely in 2019.[13] However, it has resumed production of crude iron in May 2021.[14][15] As of 2023, no changes have been found. It seems the plant is operating, with at least one blast furnace producing pig iron.[10][11]

Yuzovsky Metallurgical Plant shares its location with the Donetsk Metallurgical Plant. Yuzovsky Metallurgical Plant may still be confused as part of the Donetsksteel Metallurgical Plant. The 120-tonne EAF is part of the Yuzovsky Metallurgical Plant.[16] A 150-tonne EAF was in construction at Donetsk Metallurgical Plant in 2013 before the Russian invasion.[17][18] Yuzovsky Metallurgical Plant and Donetsk Metallurgical Plant are reported to be integrated into the Branch №1 Donetskstal, with the latter's units used as scrap metal for steel production at the former.[19]

EAF expansion

A new EAF workshop was to start operations in 2013-2014, with expected capacity ranging from 1500[2] to 1800[20] TTPA, depending on the source. However, the plans were disrupted by the Russian invasion.[2] There are records of Russian forces transferring the EAF from Donetsksteel Metallurgical Plant to Yenakiieve Iron & Steel Works plant.[21]

Yuzovsky Metallurgical Plant may still be confused as part of the Donetsksteel Metallurgical Plant. The 120-tonne EAF is part of the Yuzovsky Metallurgical Plant.[22] A 150-tonne EAF was in construction at Donetsksteel Metallurgical Plant in 2013 before the Russian invasion.[23]

In 2024, Donetsk Metallurgical Plant was renamed Branch №1 Donetskstal (Russian: Филиал №1 «Донецксталь») of Tekhnologicheskiye Investitsii LLC (Russian: ООО «Технологические инвестиции»).[24] Reconstruction works are reported to be underway and planned to continue through the first quarter of 2025.[25] The blast furnaces are assumed to be mothballed.[26]
