Background

Jindal Steel Odisha Limited (JSOL) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL). JSPL owns and operates a steel plant at Angul, Odisha, India with an operating capacity of 9.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa). JSOL was incorporated in April 2021 to develop the expansion facilities to enhance the company's capacity from 9.6 mtpa to 15.9 mtpa. JSOL will set up a 6.3 mtpa integrated steel plant at Angul, Odisha near the already existing plant of JSPL. JSOL and JSPL will continue sharing the facilities and JSPL will support JSOL in its operations. Both entities are expected to have significant operational linkages in terms of sourcing of power, raw materials and semi-finished products besides expected synergies in procurement of raw materials and marketing of finished products. Some of the facilities like the pellet plant and hot strip mill are also getting partially transferred to JSOL. The project involves an estimated capital outlay of INR 23,000 crore and with units expected to commence operations from 2025.[1][2] The capacity addition was later modified to 19.2 mtpa.[3]

The public hearing of the project was held successfully in September 2022 without any opposition. The project is expected to provide direct employment to around 9,400 people.[4]

By March 2024, SMS group implemented a new hot strip mill in the JSOL Angul works. This is the first hot strip mill at this location.[5]

A pellet plant has also been commissioned at the plant and blast furnace and basic oxygen furnace capcity are currently under implementation.[6]
