Background

OMK Vyksa Steel Works

OMK Vyksa Steel Works (Выксунский металлургический завод), also known as VSW; Vyksa Metallurgical Plant; VMZ, AO, is a previously operating steel plant that now functions as a rolling mill producing pipes and steel products. The plant uses steel supplied by the OMK Vyksa Casting and Rolling Complex.[1][2]

OMK Vyksa Steel Works has historically operated open hearth furnaces (OHF).[3] The two OHFs were shut down in 2018.[1][4][5][6] Steel is no longer produced at OMK Vyksa Steel Works and the plant is now only a rolling mill producing pipes and steel products.

OMK Vyksa Casting and Rolling Complex

Steel is produced at the Vyksa Casting and Rolling Complex (Литейно-прокатный комплекс ОМК-Сталь). The complex was commissioned in 2008 close to the location of the Vyksa Steel Works. It provides hot-rolled steel to Vyksa Steel Works which in turn manufactures large diameter pipes and railway wheels.[5] The plant currently does not produce iron, only using scrap metal in the EAF.[1] Additional DRI iron is planned to be supplied by the new OMK Ecolant steel plant once the plant is commissioned.[7]

In March 2022, Tulachermet metallurgical plant (part of IMH Tulachermet) signed a contract with OMK Vyksa Casting and Rolling Complex to supply 140,000 tons of pig iron annually.[8]
