Rungta Mines Dhenkanal steel plant, also known as RML Odisha, is a steel plant in Jhadabandh, Nimabahali, Dhenkanal, Odisha, India that operates steelmaking, blast furnace (BF), basic oxygen furnace (BOF), electric arc furnace (EAF), and direct reduced iron (DRI) technology.

Location

The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Jhadabandh, Nimabahali, Dhenkanal, Odisha, India:

Background

In 2018, Rungta Mines Ltd. proposed to install a 2.85 mtpa steel plant at villages Jharbandh, Galpada and Tarkabeda, district Dhenkanal in Odisha. It planned to establish the facilities in two phases of 1.45 million tonnes per annum followed by 1.4 million tonnes per annum.[1] The capacities and configuration were modified subsequently.[2]

According to the OECD steelmaking report, the plant plans to expand its EAF capacity by 110 ttpa by 2030.[3] According to an environmental clearance dated August, 2021, the plant is partially under operation and partially under construction. The plant has also proposed to expand facilities from 3.55 mtpa to 7.53 mtpa expected to be completed by 2030.[4]

In August 2023, Rungta Mines Ltd placed an order with Danieli for the supply of two new, high-speed bar and wirerod mills to be installed at Dhenkanal and Kamanda Steel plants in the state of Odisha, India. These will be the fifth and sixth Danieli rolling mill projects for the Indian steel producer.[5]
