Sinobras Marabá steel plant (Usina Siderúrgica Sinobras Marabá) is a steel plant in Marabá, Pará, Brazil that operates blast furnace (BF), basic oxygen furnace (BOF), and electric arc furnace (EAF) technology.
Location
The map below shows the exact location of the plant in Marabá, Pará, Brazil:
- Location: Rodovia Gov. Augusto Montenegro, 6014, Distrito Industrial
- Coordinates (WGS 84): -5.414287, -49.081305 (exact)
Background
Sinobras entered Brazil's long steel industry in 2008, shortly after having acquired the assets of its predecessor Siderúrgica Marabá (Simara). Buildiing upon Simara's pair of pre-existing blast furnaces, the new Sinobras plant added a 312 ttpa melt shop and a 300 ttpa rolling mill. Crude steel production at the Sinobras plant rose steadily, from 181,000 tonnes in 2009 to 475,000 tonnes in 2023, while pig iron production (now handled exclusively by the larger of the original blast furnaces) plateaued out between 100 and 150 ttpa.[1]
Expansion project
In May 2022, Sinobras announced that it would expand its steel making operations in Marabá, adding a new unit with an annual capacity of 500 ttpa.[2][3] Engineering studies began in January 2023, with start up of the expansion project scheduled for late 2025.[4][5] As of January 2024 the project's timeline had been pushed back, with construction now expected to begin in early 2026 and commercial operations to follow by mid-2027.[6][7] Pig iron for Sinobras's new facility was to be produced at the neighboring Tecnored Marabá iron plant, a new project being developed simultaneously by Vale.[6][7]
