Background

Cheonseong Youth Coal Mine (Chunsung, 천성청년탄광) is an underground coal mine in North Pyongan Province, North Korea.[3] The mine is part of Suncheon Coal mine Complex. Located in the northern region of South Pyongan Province, the mine complex is composed of Cheonseong Youth Coal Mine, Shinchang Youth Coal Mine, February 8 Jikdong Coal Mine, Hallyeong Coal Mine, and Ryeongdae Coal Mine.[4][5]

The coal mine was developed in 1958.[5]

According to the National Institute for National Unification, reserves are 70 million tonnes, the production capacity is 1 million tonnes per year, and the production as of 2005 was about 12,000 tonnes.[5] A more recent source - 2020 KDB Industry Report - refers to the annual production of 300,000 tonnes and the same reserves estimate.[6]
