Background

Shinchang Youth Coal Mine (신창청년탄광) is an underground coal mine in South Pyongan Province, North Korea.[3] The mine is part of Suncheon Coal mine Complex. Located in the northern region of South Pyongan Province, the mine complex is composed of Sinchang Youth Coal Mine, February 8 Jikdong Coal Mine, Cheonseong Youth Coal Mine, Hallyeong Coal Mine, and Ryeongdae Coal Mine.[4][5]

According to the National Institute for National Unification (1987), the annual production capacity of the mine was 2.5 million tons, and the reserves were estimated to be 200 million tonnes[4] A more recent source - KDB Industry report from 2020 - refers to the mine as an old developed coal mine with unfavourable mining conditions. The annual production capacity is stated at 1.5 million tonnes, and reserves are estimated at 120 million tonnes.[6] A summary table in the report (page 268) mentions the mine's production of only 30,000 tonnes.[6]
