Background
February 8 Jikdong Coal Mine (also known as 2.8 Jikdong Coal Mine, 2.8직동청년탄광) is an underground coal mine in Jikdong, Suncheon, South Pyongan Province, North Korea.[3] The mine is part of Suncheon Coal mine Complex.[4] Located in the northern region of South Pyongan Province, the mine complex is composed of the 2.8 Jikdong Coal Mine, Shinchang Youth Coal Mine, Cheonseong Youth Coal Mine, Hallyeong Coal Mine, and Ryeongdae Coal Mine.[5]
The 2.8 Jikdong Youth Coal Mine is referred to as one North Korea's leading anthracite coal mines.[5] The Ministry of Unification's portal refers to the mine's reserves estimated at 34 million tonnes and production estimate of 30,000 tonnes.[5] However, 2020 KDB Industry report refers to the mine's reserves at 180 million tonnes and production of 300,000 tonnes.[6] It appears that the lower production figure comes from an error in translation - given that the mine is referred to as the leading anthracite mine, it is assumed that the higher figure of 300,000 tonnes is more accurate.
Coal produced in this coal mine is supplied for thermal power plants, metallurgy, chemical industry, and cement production, such as Pyongyang power station.[5]
In September 2022, an accident was reported at the mine where 3 people were killed and dozens injured when they were crushed by a collapsing beam.[7]
